Comparison of Dr Kwaku Person-Lynn and Basil Davidson

Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn examines what has been taken from Africa in his lecture.  He focuses on how Africa has been stripped away from its inventions, people who have African descent such as Beethovan, music and scientific innovations that originated from Africa but has wrongly been misconstrued as from other people and places not Africa.  Basil Davidson examines the history of Africa as well and provides the real facts of the history of Africa.  While both scholars look at how Africa has been a victim of brute colonization and exploitation and as a result stereotyped and stigmatized and both are shedding more light on what Africa really is and was, Basil Davidson focuses debunking the stereotypes in a positive aspect while on the other hand Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn seems to be more down trodden on how Africa has been perceived and takes a more victimized approach while debunking the stereotypes.

Pan-Africanism

Pan Africanism:

This is a movement that seeks to unify African people or people living in Africa into one large community. The goal is to combine the region’s economic, racial, social and political spheres. The term has been closely linked to Afrocentrism which is an ideology that emerged during the civil rights movement in the United Sates and refers to an ideology of African American identity politics. The Pan African movement is one that seeks to represent the trials and tribulations that Africans have faced as they were a product of slavery, racism, colonialism and neo-colonialism. It is to bring together the historical, cultural, spiritual, artistic, scientific and ethical systems that Africans have valued.

The concept was originally brought about by Henry Sylvester-Wiliams and also Edward Wilmot Blyden. Noted leaders in the push towards Pan Africanism were Casely Hayford who wrote Ethopia Unbound: Studies in Race Emancipation, W.E. B Dubois who organized Pan African conferences form 1919-1927, Marcus Gravey who founded Universal Improvement Association in 1914 and the “Back to Africa” movement, George Padmore who wrote Pan-Africanism or Communism and was also the con-founder of the Pan African Congress in 1945and Kwame Nkrumah who organized the very first conference of independent African states in 1958.

Exploring Africa: Journal 2
What are other characteristics of the continent?
Africa has an immense amount of untapped resources but due to years of being exploited and political unrest the region has not been able to take advantage of these resources. The AU was formed to create a more unified Africa and to create a more interconnectedness of the region in regards to the distribution of resources. An interesting fact about Africa is that it is indeed the birthplace of Man. If people were aware that this is fact is true, I wonder if it’ll shed a lighter light on Africa and people would realize how important it is to stem away from these stereotypes.
How many countries form the AU?
- 54
When was the OAU formed?
- May 25, 1963.
Which countries was the last to be admitted to the OAU?
- South Africa on June 6, 1994.
When was the AU formed?
- July 9, 2002.

Based on Africa’s global location (as projected on the map), (a) do you think that Africa has a long history of active contact (trade, migration, exchange of ideas) with other regions of the world? OR (b) do you think that until recently (the past 300 years) Africa has been isolated from other regions of the world? Give as many reasons as you can for your answer.
Africa has had a long history of active contact of trade, migration and exchange of ideas but in a coercive way. They have been a victim of power, greed and corruption this as a result has led to the history of active contact of trade, migration and ideas. The region has been exploited immensely, resources stripped and sold for outsiders benefits, people dehumanized as they have been sold as slaves and used as laborers, shipped across the world to Europe and North America to work for the profit of Westerners thus resulting in the exchange of ideas as Africans have been forced to migrate and with them they have taken parts of their culture.

Video Review

VIDEO REVIEW: AFRICA PART 1, DIFFERENT BUT EQUAL

The purpose of this video was to debunk stereotypes created by Western Explorers and others who without really doing in depth research or analysis of the continent took away surface level knowledge of the region and its people and dispersed their perspectives of Africa to the rest of the world which resulted in an inane amount of stereotypes and stigmas. These stigmas attached an overtly negative connotation to the continent and its people, as they basically degraded and dehumanized the region and its people and some of these stigmas still are present today which to me is strange as we all have the ability to research what the continent is really like because of the amount of resources at our disposal, however, most of us still go by what we have to exposed to which is dangerous as it perpetuates stereotypes that are false. The information that this video is essential in clearing up false notions and propels people to think beyond of what is shown to us and makes us all more aware and objective in what we are exposed to.

FACTS ABOUT AFRICA

The media has an immense amount of power and influence. What they present to society is most often if not always taken as is, no one really goes and takes the extra step to do their own research or questions what the media presents. This creates quite a bit of issues as what the media always presents is not always accurate, and most often is biased. A prime example of misconstrued facts is how Africa has been depicted over the years. Whether in movies, television, books or even in the education system, Africa has been looked at through the eyes of misconception. What has been portrayed in such mediums has been what Africa has been presented as: a “country” that is always warm and sunny, full of wild life and exotic animals, illiterate people who live in the wild and speak a different tongue and eat strange food when in actuality that is just narrow view of what Africa really is.
Africa is the second largest continent in the world, full of diversity and beautiful landscape, rivers, lakes and immense with various cultures, natural resources, dialects, and a populace of over a billion people

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Hi,
My name is Sonal and I am currently enrolled in my third year
at Kwantlen where I am pursuing a Bachelors of Arts Degree with
a Minor in Political Science. Music, reading, travelling and some type of physical
activity take up whatever spare time I have. I have discovered a love for Sociology,
studying the relation between humans and society, structure and development
and societal problems has brought a copious amount of awareness into my life.
I feel that it is necessary to educate oneself on issues that occur in society
and global world we live in today in order to make a change or difference.
Global Studies naturally seemed like a fitting class for me as I like to analyze
societal issues that occur on a global level as I feel it affects every one of us.
I am excited to take an in depth look of Africa and understanding the region in a
more holistic, balanced, non-stereotypical way.
